Case Study 3 Music Video

Case Study 3

  • It starts off with a close up of water spilling into a bath. It then cuts to her undressing, a close up shows this, insinuating that she is about to get into the bath that is being run. Another close up shows the water spilling into the bath then again of her undressing.
  • It shows her as her head is above the water and looking down. The music begins.
  • A birds eye view shows her as she lays in the bath then it cuts to an extreme close up of her face as she sings the next lyrics.
  • The camera cuts to different places around her face, still an extreme close up shot.
  • Cutting to a mid close up it shows her crawled up in a ball in the bath singing.
  • Its then cuts to close ups of her face coming in from two different angles.
  • When the beat comes in a white male is seen from behind leaning over before it again cutting to a close up of Rihanna looking distraught in the bath.
  • The camera zooms out and the shots captures she whole body as she lays back in the bath.
  • Cutting to another birds eye view it shows her laying on her stomach in the filled up bath as she continues to sing
  • The guy seen previous is now seen singing and leaning over an empty bath. His wearing a white top and black jeans. His face is unrecognizable as the lighting is too dark making him come across as a very mysterious character.
  • It quickly cuts to a visible close up of his face whilst he continues to sing then a close up of her face then back to him again.
  • Cutting to him leaning over a sink and looking into a mirror cuts can also see Rihanna still in the bath moving around showing her singing with him.
  • A close up shot of Rihannas face is shown followed by the guy in the white shirt sitting with his hands held together, leaning forward on a bench looking off into the distance as he sings.
  • Another close up of Rihanna is seen with a long shot of the guy sitting in the same position, this continues till the end of the music video.
  • It ends with Rihanna leaning her head nack into the water an a single tear run down her eye. This is seen with another close up shot of her face.
  • Then finally blackout.

Case Study 2 Music Video

Case Study 2

Ciara- Body Party

·         The music video begins with a close up Ciara’s face opening out of a transition. In my music video I wish to open with a transitions as well as it sets the music video.

·         It then shows a long shot of just the silhouette of her body as she dances behind a screen

·         A close up shows the side of her face as she sings and her name fades in of screen. I really like the composition of this shot as she sings and her name fades out. It cuts back to the silhouette of her dancing behind the screen then again to the profile view of her and a quick fade in and out of the title of the song cutting to a close up of only her face, head on.

·         Finally the last shot of her profile with a quick fade in and out of then director’s name and a close up of her face.

·         The camera films a mid-shot of her walking through a hallway then a mid-close up of the front of her as she walks, followed by another mid shot behind her as she walks.

·         The camera cuts and pans, usually mid shots of the room showing a bunch of people either dancing, talking or mingling with others. The location shows that she is at some type of party as a mid-shot shows her on a red chair moving around surround by a few women as she sings.

·         Cutting to her alone against a white wall which could be taken in a studio, wearing a black vest. I would also like to do some studio work in my music video as we are able to change the effects of the background if using a green screen. I also like the fact she is the only one in this particular shot leaving all the focus on Ciara.

·         It cuts to her in the middle of the party doing a sexy hip hop dance routine in the middle of two other ladies doing the same routine.

·         Every now and then it cuts to a close up jus of her face with the white screen behind. Throughout these different scenes she is seen lip syncing to the song.

·         They use a long-mid shot when showing the scenes of her dancing so that the audience will be able to see all of her movement.

·         At one point when she is in front of the white background the camera pans down before the scene cuts to her again dancing at the party. She is seen gaining the attention of one of the partygoers a male as she dances. A long shot shows his interest as her stops and stares at her.

·         She walks up to him, the music stops and it cuts to a shot of the outside of the mansion they were more than likely partying at. It then cuts to a mid-shot of Ciara and a female friend conversing near a pool and dialogue begins.

·         Cutting to her dancing for the guy whose attention she captured before, she is seen in the bedroom dancing for him as he sits on a chair in front of him. A mid- shot shows her dancing as it cuts from angle to angle.

·         Cutting to her back at the party dancing with her two friends then her silhouette we saw at the beginning with a fade in and out of the title of the song and the director.

Case Study 1 Music Video

Case Study 1

Beyoncé- Halo

·         It begins with a close up of Beyoncé as she watches over a male who is laying in the bed. Another close-up and his, as their faces touch again to her own her own and back and forth. A white effects cuts in as she begins to sing. Her and her 'boyfriend' remain being affectionate as it cuts from them both together and her own her own -still close up shot.

·         It then pans to her location which looks like an urban dance studio and a long shot of her in a black leotard reinforcing and insinuating that she is a dancer and her ‘boyfriend’ look down at her from above. An over the shoulder shot shows this.

·         It then cuts with a medium cutting rate of her and him being affectionate which we saw at the beginning and her stretching and rehearsing in the studio. The only time she is seen singing is when she is with her ‘boyfriend’. A constant white blur effect cuts in now and then making some shots harder to see as if it was an effect coming from the sun shining through a window. I do not think I will be using this effect in my own music video.

·         A close up shows her and her ‘boyfriend’ playing with each other’s hands then a close up of her then his face. A mid-long shot then shows them sitting together on the chair, then a close up of her face as she continues to sing.

·         A mid shot shows the camera track her as she rehearses. Cutting of a low view of her boyfriend higher up looking down at her.

·         As she rehearse the cameras tilts down from her head to toes showing her movement cutting to a close up of an over the shoulder shot of her boyfriend looking at Beyoncé as she gazes at him. Then a cut to a close up over him, smiling back at her, and finally back to her.

·         The scenes cut quite rapidly from them together and them apart. In this video, each scene has that white blur effect sometimes harsher than others, in my own music video I could use an effect quite similar to this one if I feel it fits the theme. I also like the scenes when she is in the location of the studio surrounded by mirrors as you can see her reflection.

·         Its cuts again to her and her boyfriend playing around, smiling and dancing. A mid-close up shows them doing this.

·         The scenes begin to cut very fast of her sometimes rehearsing, her in a floaty dress in a pool of water or intimate shots of her and her partner. This is a great way of capturing the audience’s attention by creating very snappy yet dynamic.

·         Other than being in a black leotard when dancing and a floating dress when in the pool. She wears quite simple clothing throughout.

·         The scene ends with a close up of her face to face with her partner with the continuous gleaming light effect shining bright in the final scene.

Planning For Case Studies

I decided as our group is doing a music video in the R'N'B genre I will be looking at these similar artists;

I will be doing a case study on one of Rihanna's following music videos as her videos represent woman independence which is what I will be looking to recreate in my own music video. She oozes sexuality and I will like to analyse the ways in which she does this so I could possibly use it for my own music video.

I have chosen to look at a Beyoncé video as she is the worlds most popular female recording artist and is very influential in the music world.
By analysing one of her videos I can look at the editing and themes she explores and gain inspiration for my own music video which I am doing with my group.

Finally I have chosen to analyse on of Ciara's music videos as I really like the transitions she uses in her music videos. I know I can transfer it to my own music video hopefully recreating some of the effects in which se uses.

Team Meeting

Mins of meeting; 5mins
Topic; Deciding where we were going to do our music video and our different locations which we were going to use.
Also about our genre and direction we wanted to go in.

Change Of Plan

As a group we have decided to do a music video instead of going with our first idea which was doing a short film. As a group we believe we know more about music videos and can be more creative with it. As we are teenagers we see music videos all the time and would more enjoy recreating our own.

We have a few ideas which include;

  • shooting around London as a location.
  • Going with a grime and urban genre which fits in to the London Base location.
  • Keeping it R'n'b, and more hip hop.
  • Using only one artist.
  • Do a party looking location.
In the end we decided we were going to go with doing a R'n'B song.

Short Film Ideas

So far my group has come up with a few ideas for our short film. We are still trying to come up with a few more ideas as it is still a work in progress. However here are a few ideas were had already in spider diagram form:

Taster Lesson Using DSLR's

We have already had a taster lesson where we were shown how to use the DSLR Canon cameras which we will more than likely be using to shoot our short film. We were shown how to put together the camera and use the boom to record sound. We were then taught what the settings on the camera were for and what they do. We each had a turn to play around with the focus and record function on the camera. We then were put in groups and told to record a short film based on the title we were given, which was 'A secret'. We were then allowed to be creative and go about shooting our short movie. When doing this we had to think about lighting, effects and other aspects to make sure everything was in focus. We then showed it to the class and we were able to see where everyone interpreted the theme and hear feedback from our teacher.
